Josef Capek: "Opilec" (The Drunkard) in Lelio (1917)
Contrary to the popular opinion, the word "robot" did not appear in Josef Capek's short story "Opilec" in 1917. The word appeared in Karel Capek's play R.U.R - Rossums' Universal Robots in 1920. Nevertheless the word was invented by Josef Capek. More on the origin of the word here. The word that was used to describe an android in Josef's short story was "automat".
Martina Vondrova was so kind as to scan the short story from the 1925 version of Lelio published by the Aventinum publishing company in Prague. I have underlined the word "automat" which appears twice in the short story. Even if you don't read Czech you can check for yourself that there is no mention of the word "robot".
